According to The Times, Newcastle United are ready to make an offer for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka’s future at Arsenal is currently in doubt, after a public falling out with supporters, and Newcastle are said to be keen to take advantage of the midfielder’s situation.

Steve Bruce is expected to be given funds to spend in January, and he could use some in an attempt to bring the Swiss international to St. James’ Park.

If Xhaka was to move to Newcastle it would be a shock, but he could help upgrade their midfield options.

The 27-year-old has not always convinced at Arsenal, but his ability in possession could be important to Newcastle.

Bruce has some strong options in central midfield already, but Xhaka would really increase competition for places in the Magpies’ squad.

In truth Newcastle may not have had a chance at signing Xhaka if it wasn’t for his dispute with supporters.

Xhaka gesticulated angrily towards Arsenal fans after he was jeered when substituted off in a recent match against Crystal Palace, and he has not featured since.

There has been a lot of opinions expressed on the matter, but one man who has backed Xhaka, is Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester City boss said that Xhaka was an ‘incredible player’ to the Independent: ”I’m sure that all the players, Xhaka included, do absolutely everything the best for Arsenal, for his mates. He's the captain so it's because he has something special in the locker room.

"Sometimes you lose control. It will be forgotten and move forward and hopefully, in future, the fans can forgive Xhaka and he can come back and show how incredible a player he is.”

Guardiola’s comments must encourage Newcastle fans that Xhaka could perform a role for their side.

And if he was brought to St. James’ Park he would now arrive with a real point to prove.
