There is a ‘zero per cent’ chance of Dayot Upamecano signing a new contract at RB Leipzig, according to Bild, with Arsenal keen to bring the France U21 star to the Premier League at the earliest opportunity.
Upamecano has been linked with a move to the Emirates since all the way back in 2016, when he allegedly turned down the North London giants in the hope that Barcelona would come calling (Sport).
Arsenal saw an offer in the region of £50 million turned down over the summer but, with Upamecano’s contract set to expire in 2021, the Premier League giants obviously feel that Leipzig could be railroaded into selling one of their prized assets at a cut price fee.
The Bundesliga high-flyers certainly find themselves in a rather unenviable position – one Arsenal fans who remember unseemly transfer sagas involving the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie are more than familiar with.
Bild claims that Upamecano is refusing to extend his contract (there is a ‘zero per cent’ chance of a new deal) and he has even refused Leipzig’s attempts to remove a £70 million buy-out clause which is due to come into effect at the end of the season.
Whatever happens, Arsenal will have to pay big but The Gunners have no real choice if they want to strengthen a defence which looks more vulnerable than ever.
Upamecano showcased his blend of pace, power and positioning during Leipzig’s 2-0 Champions League win at Zenit St Petersburg in midweek – a performance which left Arsenal fans blown away by his potential.
