Newcastle United scouted Mbwana Samatta as he scored in Genk’s Champions League defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday, while Crystal Palace have also joined the race to sign the prolific centre-forward, according to the Northern Echo.
The first ever Tanzanian footballer to play in Europe’s premiere club competition, Samatta is really putting his country on the map with some superb performances for the reigning champions of Belgian football.
It was Samatta’s 32 goals in all competitions which inspired Genk to glory in 2018/19 and he has started the new campaign in typically barnstorming fashion.
And a bullet header against Liverpool on Merseyside, his eighth of the season already, could hardly have been better timed with scouts from Newcastle sitting in the stands at Anfield.
The Magpies need a new attacker in January regardless of their impressive 3-2 win at West Ham last time out and Samatta, an old-school goalscorer with a ferocious mentality and a leap like a salmon, could give Steve Bruce the kind of physical target man he needs to get the best out of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin.
Samatta, who has an affordable £10 million release clause in his contract, would also ease the pressure on struggling record signing Joelinton. The Brazilian was at his best when drifting in from the flanks at Hoffenheim and has found life difficult in a number nine role on Tyneside.
The report adds that Crystal Palace, who are flying high despite their lack of top quality options in attack, are also interested in Samatta as the race hots up.
