Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has played a key part of Unai Emery's side this season.

Matteo Guendouzi of Arsenal applauds fans after the Premier League match between Arsenal FC and AFC Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium on October 06, 2019 in London, United Kingdom.

Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that Matteo Guendouzi is ‘having a shocker’ at Arsenal, but getting away with it.

Guendouzi hasn’t been the Arsenal midfielder at the centre of supporters’ attention in recent weeks, after Granit Xhaka’s public show of dissent towards fans.

However, Nicholas feels that the Frenchman is really struggling in Arsenal’s team.

And he has urged Unai Emery to drop Guendouzi to the bench, ahead of Arsenal’s game this weekend.

“Matteo Guendouzi is having a shocker and he is getting away with it due to Xhaka - he needs to be taken out of the team,” Nicholas said.

“I would rather Unai Emery go with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Lucas Torreira.”

Nicholas’s call for Maitland-Niles to return is an interesting one, as the Arsenal youngster has struggled when given opportunities in midfield.

Maitland-Niles was recently criticised for his showing for Arsenal against Vitoria, when the two sides met in the Europa League at the Emirates Stadium.

Guendouzi has been inconsistent so far this season, with the youngster showing that he still has plenty to work on, despite unquestionably having a huge amount of talent.

Arsenal are next in action against Leicester City tomorrow, when it will be intriguing to see whether Emery takes Nicholas’s advice on board and leaves Guendouzi out or decides to keep faith in the midfielder.
