Premier League outfit Aston Villa have been linked with a £20m move for Steven Gerrard’s Europa League hero – but will Morelos really leave Ibrox?
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has admitted to the Birmingham Mail that he was suitably impressed by Alfredo Morelos’ brilliant Europa League volley on Thursday night amid speculation that the Premier League outfit could make a £20 million January bid for the Rangers talisman.
Morelos took his tally for the season to a remarkable 21 goals in 25 games when 2018/19 Champions League semi-finalists Porto arrived at Ibrox. A stunning volley, swerving away from Argentina number one Augustin Marchesin with his left foot, opened the scoring and he set up Steven Davis just minutes later as The Gers secured a famous 2-0 win.
Considering that Aston Villa have struggled to make their superiority count in games since being promoted back to the big time, it is no real surprise that Smith is reportedly keen to recruit a new number nine.
The Scottish Sun suggests that Villa, as well as Crystal Palace, could offer £20 million to hand Morelos a dream move to the Premier League. And Smith has done little to silence the rumours ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wolves.
“I certainly saw his goal last night. It was a very good finish,” said the former Brentford boss.
“Possibly (we will sign a striker), simply because Keinan Davis has a hamstring injury at the moment so he’s one who is out.
“We’ve got young Wesley who is playing his first Premier League campaign, like a few others are, so we will just have to wait and see until January.”
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has barely missed an opportunity to make it clear that he has no interest in cashing in on his Colombian hitman midway through the season, especially as the Glasgow giants are in with a genuine chance of ending their seven year title drought.
