Goal-shy Premier League outfit Newcastle United will be even more keen to sign Victor Osimhen after his brilliant Champions League goal for Lille.

Ezequiel Garay and Gabriel had a 15 yard head-start on Victor Osimhen when a Lille midfielder played the ball over the top of the Valencia defence during the early stages of Tuesday’s Champions League clash at the Mestalla.

Not that it mattered. Lille’s irrepressible goal-machine turned on the afterburners and left the South American duo choking on his dust, taking a bouncing ball in his stride before coolly slotting the ball underneath an onrushing Jasper Cillessen.

That was the ninth goal that Osimhen has scored since joining Les Dogues from Chaleroi over the summer and, although Valencia bounced back to batter the Ligue 1 side 4-1 on the Castellon Coast, that brilliant individual effort remains the game’s most memorable moment.

Nicolas Pepe, Rafael Leao and Thiago Mendes all bid farewell to Lille over the summer and Osimhen, if he carries on like this, will be following in their footsteps sooner rather than later.

The Chronicle reports that a rather goal-shy Newcastle United have been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old Nigerian, whose explosive pace has led to rather inevitable comparisons with compatriot and former Magpies number nine Obafemi Martins.

A powerful, aggressive centre-forward who comes alive in the penalty area, former Chaleroi team-mate Nicolas Penneteau thinks Osimhen is less Martins and more Didier Drogba (La Voix du Nord). And, on last night’s evidence, links with a Chelsea legend are not a million miles wide of the mark.
