Everton defender Mason Holgate has started in Everton’s last two matches and caught the eye.

Everton boss Marco Silva has told the Liverpool Echo that Mason Holgate has impressed him since knocking on his office door to find out why he wasn’t being picked.

Holgate was loaned out by Everton last term, but was kept at Goodison Park this season.

Holgate was hoping that he would be offered regular game time in the Premier League, but the youngster was continuously overlooked in the early weeks of the season.

Silva favoured both Yerry Mina and Michael Keane, with Holgate regularly missing out on being in Everton’s starting line-up.

As time passed, Holgate was eager to find out where he was going wrong.

And in recent times, with Mina out injured, Holgate has been offered his opportunity.

The centre-back has done well since stepping into Everton’s team, and he even scored in their League Cup tie against Watford in midweek.

And Silva said: “Mason came to my office not just because he wasn’t playing, he wanted to know what he should do in a different way to improve.

“It is easy for Mason to understand the job we are doing with the central defenders since we joined the club.

“We will do the same with Mason.

“I told him what I wanted, he understood and the good games he is having, all the credit is to him.

“He understood and is working hard and getting his chance.”

Holgate could now have forced his way into Everton’s team.

Even though both Keane and Mina may well be fit enough to play at the weekend, Holgate looks likely to start.

Everton are next in action against Tottenham Hotspur, as they look to continue to build momentum, after winning three of their last four matches.
