The young Liverpool goalkeeper is set to get a big chance tonight.

Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has confirmed that 20-year-old goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will start tonight’s League Cup clash against Arsenal, speaking to the Reds official club website.

With Alisson returning to full fitness, Jurgen Klopp again has a competitive suite of goalkeepers to choose from in different competitions.

Adrian remains the number two at the club behind the Brazilian, already playing 11 matches so far this season.

It was expected by some that given Alisson’s return, the Spaniard would take up domestic up duties in both the League Cup and FA Cup.

However, Lijnders’ comments suggest that Kelleher is the man chosen for tonight’s competition, no matter how far they go.

As quoted by, he said: “We have Adrian, who did an unbelievable job and if something happens with Ali, Adrian is our No.2 and then has to do the job.

“But in this League Cup, it is Caoimhin’s competition. As I said before the MK Dons game, with youth development, with these moments when they are in between the U23s and the first team, consistency is very important.

“He had a good game and he is preparing for another one. It will be special for him playing at Anfield.”

Kelleher kept a clean sheet in that match against MK Dons, with Klopp later singling out his performance as ‘absolutely brilliant’ (

Some fans though feel Adrian has been hard done by with this selection snub. Should the 32-year-old have played to help keep him as sharp as possible in the even that Alisson is injured again?

These supporters have taken to Twitter over the last 24 hours to share their thoughts ahead of tonight’s match…
