The former Nottingham Forest scout Tommy Johnson has returned to work at another English club after being linked with a return to Celtic.

Johnson followed Martin O'Neill to Nottingham Forest earlier this year, having played under the Ulsterman at Celtic Park.

But his stay was short-lived after O'Neill was replaced as City Ground manager by Sabri Lamouchi in June.

A report on the back page of the Scottish Daily Mail's 28 August edition claimed that another of O'Neill's former Celtic players, Neil Lennon, wanted Johnson as part of his scouting team back in Glasgow, where he has returned for a second spell as Bhoys boss.

But no such move materialised and Johnson was instead due to join Southend United as head of recruitment, alongside a pair of old Celtic teammates, Henrik Larsson and John Mjallby, who would have been manager and assistant boss respectively, but for his last-minute withdrawal to take up a mystery role elsewhere.

And it was announced on Wednesday that Blackpool will be the Englishman's next destination.

In a statement on the club's official website, Blackpool confirmed Johnson's arrival as head of recruitment, with Jonathan Gibson joining as head of technical scouting.

The Seasiders owner, Simon Sadler, said: “I am pleased to welcome both Tommy and Jonathan to the club in what are very defined recruitment and scouting roles.

“From the outset, I have made clear that I want this to be a modern, progressive football club and I believe that, alongside the football expertise of our new CEO Ben Mansford, these appointments will form a structured recruitment setup that will support the manager and enable us to identify, monitor and sign players for the long-term.”

Will the former Nottingham Forest and Celtic man prove a good addition for Blackpool?
