David Coote was officiating Aston Villa’s win at Brighton on Saturday, with Martin Atkinson in the VAR room. The roles were reversed between the duo when Liverpool recorded a draw at Old Trafford.
Both Liverpool and Aston Villa were on the end of some controversial VAR calls over the weekend, with David Coote and Martin Atkinson officiating both games.
During Villa’s win against Brighton, Coote was the on-field referee as he wrongly gave a foul to the away team which led to Brighton opening the scoring, and then later on in the game, Atkinson, who was on VAR duty, ruled out Conor Hourihane’s goal for a foul on the goalkeeper.
That last decision didn’t sit well with the Villa fans, who weren’t too surprised to see that the two officials were once again in the middle of a VAR storm whilst they were officiating Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United.
Divock Origi felt that he should have been awarded a foul in the build-up to Marcus Rashford’s goal, and when VAR checked the incident, Coote, who had swapped roles from yesterday’s game at Villa, decided against overturning his more senior colleague on the field.
The Villa fans weren’t surprised to see all of this unfold at Anfield, as both officials showcased their incompetence once again whilst managing a Premier League game.
Whilst it didn’t end up costing Villa the points, it did from Liverpool’s perspective, who despite performing poorly on the day, will feel that VAR was well and truly against them on Sunday.
The fact that both officials were involved in the biggest and most controversial talking points of the weekend just perhaps shows what type of job they were doing.
Villa fans weren’t pleased with the decisions that were made during their game, and Liverpool supporters felt the same 24 hours later.
Here is a selection of Villa fans reacting to Coote’s VAR calls at Old Trafford:
Look at our game Atkinson over ruled coote for conors goal and then Sunday coote couldn’t or wouldn’t over rule Atkinson for Rashford goal it’s a complete joke!! #avfc— Shirley villan (@AndrewMahon17) October 21, 2019
@richardajkeys David Coote was actually the on pitch referee at Villa Park yesterday, and Atkinson on VAR duty. Is it because Atkinson is a more senior referee that he felt he could overturn Coote for the AVFC “goal”?— Bob Bhowmik (@bobchuwah) October 20, 2019
The VAR today is Coote who gave our first goal yesterday but was overruled by Martin Atkinson on VAR for a very debatable’foul’ in the build up. Roles are reversed today and the junior official won’t overrule the senior official on field for a much clearer foul. Bullshit. #AVFC— Jim McCormack (@NutritiousJim) October 20, 2019
interesting how yesterday (wesley), the less experienced coote had his decision overturned by the more experienced atkinson, then just now, the less experienced coote refuses to overturn the more experienced atkinson decision. same official, just swapped round #avfc #var— dom (@domleadbetter1) October 20, 2019
So yesterday Martin Atkinson overruled David Coote & disallowed a perfectly good Conor Hourihane goal at #AVFC.— Lou (@Lou_IzIs) October 20, 2019
Today, David Coote didn’t overrule Martin Atkinson despite a blatant foul on Divok Origi for #LFC.#VAR & refereeing is a joke.

Its wothy of note that Martin Atkinson as a VAR official disallowed a goal for Villa for a non existant foul on the keeper… not one Brighton player appealed or made any remonstrations to the on field referee, David Coote ! Guess who was the VAR official yesterday? Coote !— SteveAVillan (@crowhurstsr) October 21, 2019
David Coote refereed Villa v Brighton yesterday. Where there was absolutely no VAR controversy at all.— Rachael Ward (@RachWardITV) October 20, 2019
David Coote was the “referee” at Villa Park yesterday and was provided us the worst performance on the pitch.— Simon Froggatt (@FroggattSimon) October 20, 2019
For the record, we won the game and thousands of people f et on both sides commented on his performance
