Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was in action last night.
Arsenal’s first-team may only be in action on Monday night, but their under-23’s had a big game on Friday night.
The Gunners take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday night, but players who won’t be involved were given a chance to impress on Friday night.
Arsenal’s under-23’s took on Chelsea at Aldershot’s Electrical Services Stadium, but fell to a 3-1 defeat against their London rivals.
Charlie Brown and Clinton Mola put Chelsea 2-0 up, and whilst Ben Cottrell pulled one back for Arsenal, Brown struck again to give Chelsea a 3-1 win.
That will have been disappointing for Emery, and the performance of defender Konstantinos Mavropanos won’t have exactly inspired confidence.
The 21-year-old has been out of action for a large chunk of 2019, and only came back from an injury sustained on the final day of last season in an under-23 game last month.
Mavropanos started against Chelsea, but the Greek centre back didn’t exactly impress, with Arsenal fans slating him on Twitter for his performance.
Some suggested that Mavropanos has been corrupted by compatriot Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and is ‘clearly struggling’ at under-23 level as he works his way back from injury.
Others called him an ‘awful signing’ and looks done at under-23 level, even suggesting that he didn’t look interested in a woeful display on Friday night.
Chelsea 1-0 up, Arsenal defence completely lost the Chelsea striker making a run through the middle. Not sure Mavropanos even knew he was there.— Dan Critchlow (@afcDW) October 18, 2019

Mavropanos clearly struggling at the U23 level. Wish he wouldn’t have suffered this many injuries. Would’ve probably developed better.— DamagedGuns (@DamagedGuns) October 18, 2019
Clarke has had quite a few impressive performances at CB this year but he had a real off game tonight. Mavropanos hasn’t impressed me at all since his injury return.— Dan Critchlow (@afcDW) October 18, 2019
U23s miss Ballard but I’d like to see McGuinness playing, not sure why he wasn’t at least in the squad tonight.
Mavropanos started the game impressively but he has made quite a few errors recently.— Jeorge Bird (@jeorgebird) October 18, 2019
Mavropanos looks done even at this level. Needs to get himself a move away in January and restart his career, because he’s never making it at Arsenal.— M (@Mobealla) October 18, 2019
What an awful signing Mavropanos was— dan (@aboyisagunner) October 18, 2019
Don’t think Mavropanos is that interested in playing u23.— Deepak (@Deepakr05) October 18, 2019
