Love animation? Love comedy? Then chances are you love Big Mouth.

Could this be the best-animated series to emerge in recent years?

Honestly. it’s a pretty solid contender. Netflix has delivered so much great content across so many genres, but in the realm of animation, it’s particularly strong.

The streaming service has offered us the hilarious comedic stylings of Bill Burr in F For Family and the truly outrageous with such shows as Paradise PD. However, Big Mouth is clearly the overwhelming favourite, striking a chord with adoring teens and far beyond; make no mistake though, it’s not exactly “family gathered around the TV” viewing.

It arrived back in 2017 for season 1 and audiences were immediately impressed with the creators’ ability to juggle gross-out humour with important themes of puberty and alienation in young teens. It’s often hilarious and sometimes actually quite touching, reflecting on the growing pains we can all relate to and remember. It’s also incredibly imaginative, which is why it’s had absolutely no trouble attracting big names to subsequent seasons. The third landed on Netflix early October this year, with new audiences flocking to start from the beginning after all the buzz. Since then, people have been wondering: who is Gina Rodriguez’s character?

Who does Gina Rodriguez voice in Big Mouth?

The 35-year-old American actress voices the character of Gina Alvarez.

She first appeared in season 2 episode 2 – titled ‘What Is It About Boobs?’ – and she quickly became a recurring character. Nick (voiced by Nick Kroll) develops a crush on her and much of the season explores their blossoming relationship, which as audiences predicted, doesn’t quite go to plan.

Gina reprised the role in season 3 and has now appeared in a great number of episodes, becoming somewhat of a fan-favourite as one of the more mature and level-headed characters across the show.

Gina Rodriguez: Movies & TV

The actress has appeared in plenty of TV series and films in recent years.

However – according to IMDb – she first appeared on screens in the likes of Jonny Zero (she played Rose) and Law & Order (Inez Soriano).

Since then she’s appeared in a number of notable movie productions such as 2016’s disaster-drama Deepwater Horizon (Andrea Fleytas) and Alex Garland’s sci-fi puzzler Annihilation (Anya Thorenson), but it’s TV where Gina has truly made a name for herself.

She has starred in the likes of The Bold and the Beautiful (Beverly), No Names (Megan), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Alicia) and Carmen Sandiego (titular role). However, she’s best known for the role of Jane Villanueva in the hit series Jane the Virgin. Her time on Big Mouth has helped strengthen her fanbase, yet some fans are now calling for the show to replace her…

Fans outraged on Twitter!

As reported by The Independent, Gina recently stirred controversy after saying the N-word on her Instagram story; she was singing along to the song ‘Ready Or Not’ by the Fugees.

The same source notes that she has since apologised in a video, saying: “Hey, what’s up everybody. I just wanted to reach out and apologise. I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to the Fugees, to a song that I love, that I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill. And I really am sorry if I offended you.”

Nevertheless, many on Twitter have had something to say about it all. One wrote: “Gina Rodriguez just killed her career with an Instagram story. Wait for the announcement that she won’t be coming back for season 3 of Big Mouth. It’s Roseanne all over again… fake apology and all.”

Similarly, someone added: “Okay, Big Mouth, I’m gonna need you to write Gina Rodriguez off the show now so I can keep watching.” Another expressed: “…I’m not sure what Gina Rodriguez’s voice acting adds to Big Mouth. They could replace her with literally anyone… just anything or anybody else, please!”
