The Hammers academy graduate remained an unused substitute last night in the Euro 2020 qualifying loss.
A number of fans have been commenting on Twitter regarding West Ham United ace and Charlton loanee Josh Cullen not being named in the Republic of Ireland starting XI for their Euro 2020 qualifying loss to Switzerland.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who came through the Hammers ranks, has been impressive for the Addicks this season, playing every minute of their Championship games since his arrival at the club ahead of their second fixture.
Despite Cullen's talents and form, however, Mick McCarthy did not pick him for the big game against the Swiss and he remained an unused substitute as the Irish fell to a 2-0 defeat, leaving them facing a crunch tie against Denmark in Dublin next month in order to qualify for the finals proper next summer.
Here is some of the reaction on social media:
Can someone explain to me how Whelan gets in this team?? Cullen should be starting all day. #COYBIG— CONBOY (@Con_Brennan96) 15 October 2019
What does @JoshCullen have to do to get a start over that old timer glen whelan— Liam Brennan (@ljbrennan00) 15 October 2019
After seeing him play for the whole of last season and the start of this season....with a MOTM performance in his debut....already 10x better than whelan— Liam Brennan (@ljbrennan00) 15 October 2019
Shocking , drops his best midfielder and keeps whelan in ahead of Cullen and starts McLean wingback instead of playing Coleman at the back n keep Doherty rwb ♂️— Dylan (@Dylanb2017) 15 October 2019
In all fairness boys Glenn whelan isn’t the worst of them, Jeff hendrick wouldn’t get a kick in a horsebox. Conor Hourihane is our most creative midfielder no where to to be seen. And yeah Cullen should be starting even go for the draw and play him and whelan as the two holding— Gary Lambe (@GaryLambe2) 15 October 2019
Cullen should be starting ahead of Whealan. At least Connolly is starting.— Ronan Dempsey (@RonanD88) 15 October 2019
I'm more upset over Whelan starting than I am with McClean. Its 2019. He's 35 and we should give this one to Cullen.— Rory “unmatched wisdom” Coughlan (@Rory_C103) 15 October 2019
Should be cullen exactly mate— Charltonfcboy (@Charltonfcboy2) 15 October 2019
Don't get why some of these Ireland players just get a bye to play each game. Hendrick, McClean and even Coleman have been awful in this campaign. Josh Cullen was MOTM in his first start and didn't get a minute in the last two games shows reputation gets you in. #SWIIRL #RTE— Wayne Quinn (@WazzaQuinn) 15 October 2019
Haris Seferovic's 16th-minute strike proved the difference between the two sides, before the home side sealed the win thanks to Shane Duffy's own goal.
