Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley scored twice for England after Roy Keane made some frank comments about his displays this season.
Barkley has not fully convinced at Chelsea this term, but he was handed the opportunity to start for his country last night.
Barkley actually scored twice during England’s 6-0 win over Bulgaria.
However, Keane felt that Barkley was lucky to be involved for his country, given his form for Chelsea over the course of the season so far.
“Probably on the bench, particularly in international football. He’s not done enough,” Keane said when asked where he would play Barkley before the game.
“I think he’s lucky to be in the team. There’s talent there but he doesn’t show it enough. For an attacking midfielder he doesn’t get enough goals or assists.”
Barkley will hope that his brace last night helps him establish his place in England’s side, but he faces a battle at Chelsea to earn game time.
Mason Mount seems to be ahead of Barkley in the pecking order at Chelsea, despite only recently breaking into Frank Lampard’s line-up.
It seems likely that Barkley will be left on the bench at the weekend, when Chelsea take on Newcastle United.
Barkley has just one goal for Chelsea in eight appearances across all competitions so far this season.
