Mesut Ozil is struggling for playing time at Arsenal at the moment.

Paul Merson has stated in The Daily Star that he is “shocked” that Mesut Ozil has played just once for Arsenal in the Premier League so far this season.

The former Arsenal star believes that Ozil was the Gunners’ best player in their 2-2 draw with Watford away from home at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on September 15.

Merson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, is “shocked” that the German attacking midfielder has not played for Unai Emery’s side since, and has urged the North London outfit’s manager to recall the 30-year-old.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “It’s a big few weeks for them – and that’s why I would play Ozil. I personally think he’s their best player. In terms of ability and talent he’s the best player at the club.”

Merson added: “Emery has been getting good performances out of Dani Ceballos, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson.

"But I thought Ozil was Arsenal’s best player against Watford and he hasn’t played since. That shocked me to be honest.”

Back in the team?

Ozil is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world, but the former Real Madrid star has not been great for Arsenal for a while now.

The German has struggled to play regularly for the Gunners under Emery, and it is likely that he will be out of the team for a while.

According to WhoScored, Ozil has played just 71 minutes in the Premier League for Arsenal so far this season, while in 2018-19, he made 20 starts and four substitute appearances in the league for the Gunners, scoring five goals and providing two assists in the process.
