Sunderland are said to be keen to appoint Wycome Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth to replace Jack Ross.

Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth’s comments about Sunderland fans last season now look very interesting, amid reports he has been approached by the Black Cats.

The Telegraph claim that Sunderland are keen on Ainsworth, who has done a hugely impressive job with Wycombe.

The Chairboys have punched well above their weight in League One with Ainsworth at the helm, and Sunderland know all about how difficult the Chairboys are to beat.

Last season, Wycombe held Sunderland to a 1-1 draw at Adams Park.

And after the match Ainsworth spoke very highly about Sunderland and the club’s supporters.

“Sunderland are a magnificent side, what a football club, their fans were awesome – what a following that is,” Ainsworth said to the Sunderland Echo.

Ainsworth also added positive words for former Sunderland boss Jack Ross, who he could now take over from.

“Jack is a great guy, I have a lot of respect for him,” he added. “I’m pleased they got to Wembley and hope they get promoted because he has done a fantastic job.”

If Ainsworth does take over at Sunderland it will be a big step up from his current role in terms of the pressure on him.

Sunderland have sent out the message that they are expecting promotion this term, after sacking Jack Ross.

The Black Cats are currently sat in sixth place in the League One table, after taking 19 points from 11 games so far.
