Sunderland managerial target Mark Robins has signed a new contract with Coventry City.

Stephen Elliott has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to Sunderland managerial target Mark Robins signing a new contract with Coventry City.

According to Sky Sports, Sunderland made an approach to Coventry to speak to Robins regarding the vacant managerial role at the Stadium of Light.

Robins himself told Sky Sports that the Black Cats had made an approach for him on Wednesday evening.

The former Huddersfield Town boss has also said that he has agreed a new deal with Coventry, with the League One club also releasing an official statement.

Former Sunderland forward Elliott has given his take on Robins signing a new deal.

Promotion challenge

Sunderland are sixth in the League One table at the moment with 19 points from 11 matches, eight points behind leaders Ipswich Town and four points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

The Black Cats are very much in the race for automatic promotion to the Championship.

Sunderland will return to action after the international break when they take on Wycombe Wanderers away from home in League One.
