Stephen Warnock played for Aston Villa for a four-year period, including under Martin O’Neill, who had the Midlands giants pushing for Europe, at the time

Stephen Warnock has stated that his best moment during his time at Aston Villa was beating bitter rivals Birmingham City on his debut.

The match Warnock is referring to is the 2009 clash at St Andrew’s, which Villa won 1-0, thanks to a goal, as per, from Gabby Agbonlahor.

It would have been some introduction into life at Villa for Warnock because the Second City derby is a hotly-contested encounter.

Nonetheless, this was the message Warnock sent from his personal Instagram account when asked about his best Villa moment, as fans would love his response.

Villa have continued to dominate Second City derby matches since, with Birmingham last beating their neighbours in the league in 2004.

Last season, Jack Grealish took inspiration from Agbonlahor by netting both home and away against Blues – 4-2 win at home in November, before scoring at St Andrew’s in March in a 1-0 win.

That win in March was the second of Villa’s 10-game winning run, a run which saw them surge into the Championship play-offs and then earn promotion to the Premier League.

Prior to the international break, Villa put five past fellow promoted side Norwich City, with Grealish scoring his first Premier League goal of the season.
