Ricardo Rodriguez won’t have many happy memories of Everton.
According to Blick, The Toffees are interested in signing the Switzerland international left-back from AC Milan in 2020, potentially as a replacement for the veteran Leighton Baines. The Serie A giants are expected to part company with a player they bought from Wolfsburg for £13.5 million with Atletico Madrid, Roma and Borussia Dortmund also keeping tabs on the situation.
Now, Rodriguez has played against Everton just once in almost a decade in the game and it’s fair to say it didn’t go particularly well for him at Goodison Park.
The 27-year-old was in the form of his life before Wolfsburg travelled to England for a Europa League group-stage clash in the autumn of 2014. But the Bundesliga outfit, who also started with Kevin De Bruyne and Ivica Olic on Merseyside, were thumped 4-1 by a free-flowing Roberto Martinez team.
To make matters worse for Rodriguez, he opened the scoring at the wrong end, bundling the ball into his own net after Steven Naismith had caused panic in the penalty area. Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas also got themselves onto the scoresheet to seal a brilliant win.
Rodriguez found the corner of the right net in stoppage time with the sort of curling free-kick that became his trademark at Wolfsburg, but that wasn’t much of a consolation after a miserable night at left-back.
Five years on, could Rodriguez join the club that gave him one of the toughest nights of his career?
