West Ham United have allegedly failed with a move for Gustavo Gomez.
According to ABC in Paraguay, West Ham United failed with an offer of €18million (£16.2million) for Palmeiras defender Gustavo Gomez.
The Hammers have four first-team centre backs at Manuel Pellegrini’s disposal, with Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna, Fabian Balbuena and oft-injured Winston Reid in the ranks.
Youngster Goncalo Cardoso is able to play too, but Pellegrini is seemingly keen to bring another centre back to the London Stadium.
It’s now claimed that West Ham offered around £16million for Palmeiras star Gomez, but their bid was rejected by the Brazilian club.
Gomez, 26, emerged with Libertad in Paraguay and Lanus in Argentina before earning a big 2016 move to Milan, where he made just 20 appearances.
A loan move to Palmeiras ended up becoming permanent for just €6million (£5.4million), and he helped them win the Brazilian Serie A last season.
An international teammate of Balbuena with Paraguay, Gomez is now believed to be a target for the Hammers, but their offer fell short of what Palmeiras want – despite paying just a third of the fee for Gomez in June.
Now, agent Augusto Paraja has suggested that Palmeiras are seeking more money, and the player himself is focused on a title race with the Brazilian side, but could analyse a new offer from West Ham is one arrives in 2020.
“Palmeiras do not want to sell him now and for that amount,” said Paraja. “Today, he does not intend to leave Palmeiras, he is very focused on fighting for the title with the club, but when the Brazilian season ends we will analyse it,” he added.
