Pedro Gonzalez, otherwise known as ‘Pedri’, is Barcelona’s latest wonderkid. And, according to Mundo Deportivo, he turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool and Manchester City before deciding to seal a dream move to the kings of Catalonia.
An attacking midfielder who has already played a number of senior games for Las Palmas while earning comparisons with the Deportivo La Coruna legend Juan Carlos Valeron, Pedri has the world at his feet and some of the biggest clubs on the continent desperate to sign him.
But Barcelona won the race. According to the club’s official website, Pedri has signed a two-year contract with the La Liga champions after Barca agreed a fee of £5 million. They then immediately included a staggering £90 million release clause in the teenager’s contract.
That clause will rise to £360 million if, or when, he forces his way into Ernesto Valverde’s first team.
This might seem like a long time away but, with 16-year-old Ansu Fati establishing himself as a key player at Barcelona in the blinking of an eye, don’t bet against Pedri making a La Liga debut before the season is out.
And reports from Spain claim that Premier League trio Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all wanted to sign Pedri before Barcelona won the race, with Valencia, Sevilla and Real Betis also showing an interest in the Spain youth star.
Could this be one of those near misses that Liverpool and co end up regretting for years to come?
