To the surprise of absolutely no one, Joker has turned the comic book movie genre completely on its head and become one of the best and most talked-about films of 2019 in the process.
It's received praise for the stunning acting work of Joaquin Phoenix, stunning setting and gorgeous visuals that make for one of the most striking films ever to grace the comic book genre.
Part of the film's success is owed to its unique filming locations which give the film a grimy and realistic feel and perfectly encapsulate the character of Arthur Fleck's Joker.
One such filming location is the iconic 'step street' we see throughout the film, you know, the one Joker dances down when he finally dons the iconic makeup and suit.
DID JOKER KILL HIS GIRLFRIEND: Sophie Dumond and her daughter’s fate isn’t for the faint-hearted
As well as bringing us an origins story for the best supervillain of them all, sorry Thanos, Joker brings the city of Gotham to life in a manner we've not seen since the over-the-top Batman movies of the late 80s and 90s.
Gone is the almost perfect city we see in the Christopher Nolan trilogy and replacing it is a gritty, grimy and rat-infested cesspit.
The Gotham we see in Joker almost becomes a character in itself and often reflects the mood of our main character, Arthur.
Just look at the scenes where he's walking up and dancing down the huge step street. When he limps up the steps as Arthur, the city is all grey and miserable. However, when the Joker comes dancing back down, to the tune of Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll Part 2, it's brightened up, the rain clouds have parted and we see Joker splashing around in puddles like an excited child.
Where is Joker filmed?
The reason why Joker's Gotham looks and feels like a living, breathing city is, in part, thanks to the movie's choice of filming location.
The location in question is New York City and the surrounding suburbs.
It was arguably the perfect choice for the city of Gotham, especially in the context of the film when we see that there is a garbage strike going on in the background as some streets of New York are regularly seen with bin bags strewned across them.
Where are the iconic stairs in real life?
While filming takes place across New York, the iconic stairs scenes were filmed at the step street connecting Anderson and Shakespeare Avenues along The Bronx's W167th Street.
While it may be quite a trek from the centre of Manhattan, the Joker filming location is no doubt going to become a tourist hotspot in the wake of the film.
It's just a matter of time before we see people emulating Joaquin Phoenix's Joker in dancing down the steps.
