Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on taking the Tottenham Hotspur job if Mauricio Pochettino does leave.
With Pochettino under pressure, it is claimed that Mourinho wants the job at Tottenham, as he seeks a return to management.
However, Mourinho’s relationship with Spurs fans has not always been smooth.
When Spurs beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford last season, the away contingent were keen to give Pochettino’s potential successor some stick.
‘You’re not special anymore’ the Tottenham fans sung, and the chants seemed to irk Mourinho, who fired back at them in the press conference after the game.
“They didn’t have that song when we beat them at Wembley a couple of months ago, when they had a dream of going to a Cup final,” he said to The Sun. “A title they had a big dream to win, because they don’t win many.
“That night at Wembley the United fans were singing ‘the Special One’ and of course they were not singing that.”
Tottenham’s links with Mourinho still seem doubtful at this stage, as recent reports have suggested that Pochettino’s position at the club remains safe.
The Argentine boss has credit in the bank at Tottenham after making vast strides with the club since taking charge, and even though their poor form is concerning, Spurs’s board are not about to rush into making a decision over his future.
However, if Pochettino does fail to solve Tottenham’s problems then Mourinho would undoubtedly be an excitement appointment for the North London side, and would really prove their ambition.
