Sunderland currently sit sixth in the League One table, and that seemingly wasn't quite enough for the club as Jack Ross lost his job on Tuesday.

The Black Cats were beaten 2-0 at Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon, and Ross was hoping for a response against Grimsby Town in Tuesday's Checkatrade Trophy clash.

However, just hours before kick off, Sunderland announced that they had parted company with Ross, after just shy of 18 months in charge.

Ross got Sunderland into the League One playoffs last season, only to fail in the final against Charlton Athletic, and he was expected to push for automatic promotion this term.

That hasn't really materialised so far, and having become known for drawing too man games, Sunderland have decided it's time to part ways with the Scot.

The attention will now turn to finding a replacement for Ross, and Roy Keane is certainly a popular name in a considerable section of the Sunderland fanbase.

Keane, 48, took his first steps into management in 2006 with Sunderland, taking them to the Premier League in his first season in charge to become a Black Cats hero before being sacked in December 2008.

Many Sunderland fans still love the Irishman, and have been taking to Twitter to call for Keane to come back, believing he is the perfect man for the job and can get Sunderland out of League Just as he did in the Championship more than a decade ago.
