The Black Cats forward has struggled to get regular goals but grabbed the winner for the Stadium of Light outfit last night.

A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to comment on their side’s 3-2 EFL Trophy win over Grimsby Town and Will Grigg was especially praised for getting on the scoresheet.

The 28-year-old has divided opinion amongst the Stadium of Light fanbase due to his low goal return following his move back in January, though he does work hard for the team and many think he’ll come good and rediscover his goalscoring touch.

Indeed, Grigg scored the winner against the Mariners, heading home from close range in the 86th minute and capping off a goal salvo for both sides in the latter stages of the game.

Matt Green gave Grimsby the lead in the second half before Duncan Watmore responded for Sunderland and Marc McNulty then fired the hosts ahead and, although Elliott Whitehouse responded immediately for the the Mariners, Grigg wrapped up the victory for the Black Cats.

Quite a few Sunderland fans noted how the Northern Ireland ace scored such an important, confidence-boosting goal just hours after it was confirmed that Jack Ross had left the Stadium of Light.
