The Sunderland star managed to complete a full 90 minutes in the EFL Trophy match.
Some Sunderland fans were delighted to see Duncan Watmore back on the pitch and in amongst the goals last night, as they defeated Grimsby Town 3-2 in EFL Trophy action.
In some ways the night’s action played second fiddle to the other big Tuesday news at the Stadium of Light – the sacking of Jack Ross.
Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has told the BBC that the decision was made to boost the Black Cats’ hopes of promotion back to the English Championship.
The team had to steel themselves for the fixture then and despite being run close by the English League Two outfit, eventually emerged as 3-2 winners.
Grimsby took the lead on the hour mark, so Sunderland required a comeback to get the job done, which was sparked by a Watmore goal. He reacted first to a parried shot, coolly finishing in the far corner.
The 25-year-old has struggled with injury and fitness issues over the last couple of seasons and has made just one League One appearance this term.
Still, some think he is capable of making an impact at the club if he can get matches under his belt.
Fans seemed to generally enjoy his performance. They voted him as the man of the match via the club’s official Twitter account.

You’ve got one hour…GO!
Other supporters took to the social media site to either remark on their happiness at his return, or share their thoughts that he should be used more often moving forward…
Watmore for me because he got a goal on his return that’s his first appearance since the opening day and he was lively also didn’t get injured. ⚪️⚪️— Oluwaseun Bamgboye (@bamgboyeolu) October 8, 2019

I really hope he can have a long injury free run this season.— kevin defty (@kevindefty1) October 9, 2019
He looked very good last night, pleased he got a goal likewise with @WillGrigg— SAFC-FCB (@SafcFcb) October 9, 2019
Really hope things work for him and he doesnt get injured again. Great lad. #safc— #HollowayIn ⚪️ (@Christianfors23) October 9, 2019
Watmore, folk moan about him but we’ve none like him. Pace and unpredictability at league 1 level will win matches. Obviously his injury record isn’t great but the way he gets slated is toxic. How can folk blame a lad for being injured. He obviously doesn’t want to be!— Lee Burrow (@Kendalbuzz) October 8, 2019
IMO. Duncan Watmore is the only out and out goalscorer at the club. Plagued by injuries and not yet fully match fit. He is in the right place at the right time when it matters, that’s the sign of a goalscorer for me. I would play him week in week out.— Roy Williams (@Roy88316486) October 9, 2019
Our best player last night for me. Tried to make things happen and worked hard— Ian (@ian_safc_1974) October 9, 2019
