Jordan Archer has been without a club since leaving Championship outfit Millwall in the summer – could Villa give the goalkeeper a Premier League chance?
Former Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer is training with Premier League outfit Aston Villa as he looks to get his career back on track, as reported by The Mail.
Villa are not exactly suffering from a shortage of goalkeeping options right now. £8 million England international Tom Heaton currently holds the number one shirt but, should he suffer an injury or a suspension, Dean Smith can call upon Norwegian and Croatian internationals in the shape or Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic, not to mention the underrated Jed Steer.
So it remains to be seen whether a contract could be on the cards for Archer if he impresses behind the scenes at Villa Park.
The Mail adds that one of Kalinic, Nyland or Steer will likely be sold in January, meaning there could potentially be room for one more shot-stopper in Smith’s squad.
Archer, a 26-year-old with a single Scotland cap to his name, has been without a club since his contract at Millwall expired in the summer but the lack of apparent interest in him is a surprise, given that he impressed between the sticks at The Den.
He was named Millwall’s Player of the Season back in 2016 while helping the Londoners reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in two of the last three seasons.
