The pundit thinks fitness is the only thing holding the Celtic forward back right now.

Former Celtic hero Frank McGarvey believes Leigh Griffiths is the best striker at the Hoops right now, The Scottish Sun report.

Griffiths is again struggling with injury and fitness issues as part of Neil Lennon’s squad after making an initial comeback in the early stages of the season.

With Odsonne Edouard and Vakoun Bayo apparently both ahead of him in the pecking order right now, he seems a long way away from getting regular action in the Hoops.

McGarvey though reckons he has the most talent in the position.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Leigh Griffiths is the best striker at Celtic, but he has to get himself fit and focused.

“I like Odsonne Edouard. He’s maturing all the time and he’s developing into a good centre- forward.

“Right now he’s proving himself every week and deserves to start ahead of Griffiths.”

Bizarre claim

There’s no doubt that Griffiths was once the premier striker at Celtic. The season he scored 40 goals showed he can put together the kind of form that makes him unstoppable.

However, the body of evidence over the last few suggests that McGarvey is misguided with his opinion. Right now Edouard is far and away the most talented forward at the club.

Whether at home or abroad, the Frenchman has demonstrated he has ability on the ball beyond what Griffiths can produce.

Most importantly, over the last 12 months he’s been the man to score the goals in the big games that win points and trophies for the Hoops.

Griffiths is still a useful option for Neil Lennon. Fans will be hoping he gets back to fitness as soon as possible.

When everyone’s at the top of their game though, Edouard must continue to get the nod.
