Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger spoke to BeIN Sports about Bayern Munich's role in Serge Gnabry's transfer from North London to Werder Bremen in 2016.

Gnabry has been in fine form of late, especially in the Champions League where he scored four times against Arsenal's fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a 7-2 victory for the German champions at the start of this month.

His performances since leaving Arsenal have been magnificent which has made a number of fans question Wenger's decision to sell him in 2016. Wenger was asked the same by BeIN Sports and the Gunners boss claimed that Bayern Munich manipulated the youngster which made him force a move out of North London.

He said: "We tried to extend his contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after.

"He came back from a very bad experience at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him."

That is a massive claim against the Bundesliga heavyweights but it does make sense considering how quick they were to sign him from Werder Bremen. Gnabry joined Bayern in the summer of 2017, just a year after he left Arsenal which puts some weight on Wenger's claim.

Gnabry is someone who would have been a hugely valuable asset to Arsenal if he had stayed but the German has moved on and so have Arsenal. The Gunners signed Nicolas Pepe for a club-record fee earlier this summer, something that they might not have done had Gnabry still been available to Unai Emery.
