Last season, Erik Ten Hag guided Ajax to their first domestic double since 2001, their first Eredivisie title since 2014 and their first Champions League semi-final since the turn of the century, beating Juventus and Real Madrid along the way while playing some of the most exciting, free-flowing football Europe has seen in years.

And, despite losing poster boys Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie De Jong to Juventus and Barcelona over the summer, Ajax have returned with a vengeance. They are top of the Eredivisie table after seven games and that dazzling 3-0 away win at Valencia in the Champions League group stages was arguably the best team performance from any club in the competition this season.

So why on earth would Ten Hag walk away right now to take over an underachieving Everton side who are stuck in the Premier League’s relegation zone heading into the international break?

According to 90Min, The Toffees have made the 49-year-old Dutchman their top target should Marco Silva lose his job and you can certainly see the appeal of Ten Hag, who apparently has a big admirer in Marcel Brands.

The former Utrecht coach learned from Pep Guardiola during his spell as Bayern Munich’s reserve coach and it has always felt like he was on a one-way trip to the top.

But while the report claims that Brands is confident of luring Ten Hag to the North West, the Everton fans are far less hopeful.
