3 signings Daniel Stendel could target if he's made Sunderland boss - including 22-in-44 Barnsley striker

Sunderland have reportedly made contact with the recently-departed Barnsley boss.

Daniel Stendel was some people's favourite for the Sunderland manager's job even before it became available.

And according to The Chronicle, Sunderland have already made contact with the recently-departed Barnsley boss just hours after sacking Jack Ross.

Stendel's Barnsley were one of the clubs that beat the Mackems to promotion out of League One last season, playing an exciting brand of attacking football.

But if the German was to take the Stadium of Light reins, which of the side he put together at Oakwell could follow him up the A1?

HITC Sport have picked out three possibilities...

Alex Mowatt

Sunderland aren't short of central midfielders right now, but they could be next summer when the contracts of Luke O'Nien and Dylan McGeouch are understood to expire. The left-footed Mowatt scored or made 14 League One goals for Barnsley last season and is, statistically, their top Championship performer this time around (Who Scored). His deal is also up in June, although the Tykes hold a one-year option. Should they swap places with Sunderland, however, the Yorkshire side may struggle to keep him regardless.

Luke Thomas

Sunderland could lose Duncan Watmore and Chris Maguire at the end of their contracts next summer, and would need to replace them whichever division they're in. Clearly impressed by his efforts on loan at Coventry City last season, Stendel made Thomas one of his first summer recruits. And the former Derby County winger already looks like £1.2 million well-spent, having scored or made two goals in his 10 Championship outings for the Tykes. As with Mowatt, a move to Sunderland could appeal if Barnsley go down.

Cauley Woodrow

With Marc McNulty's loan deal running for now until the end of the season only and a lack of a proven Championship goalscorer currently within Sunderland's ranks, Woodrow's position is one in which Stendel would likely want to strengthen. And who better than Woodrow, a striker who's scored 22 goals in 44 games since the 45-year-old brought him to Barnsley? Once again, the Mackems could have a better chance of signing him next summer.
