Rangers have leapfrogged Celtic to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Pundit Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio Five Live that he thinks Rangers have really strengthened over the summer, and is worried about Celtic’s firepower outside of Odsonne Edouard.

With both teams in Europa League action on Thursday night, they were both back to league action on Sunday, starting with Celtic away at Livingston.

The Bhoys served up a dismal display at the Tony Macaroni Arena, with Ryan Christie’s red card setting up Livi for a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Scott Robinson and Lyndon Dykes.

Just hours later, Rangers hammered Hamilton Academical 5-0 at Ibrox, with Jermain Defoe scoring a hat-trick for the Gers in a thumping win.

With Celtic losing and Rangers winning, the Bhoys lost top spot in the Scottish Premiership, with Steven Gerrard’s men taking full advantage of their chance to go top.

Celtic have dropped five points in their last two league games, allowing Rangers to get ahead of them, and it seems that there really could be a fierce title battle this season.

Now, Chris Sutton has admitted that he thinks Rangers have really strengthened over the summer, and believing Alfredo Morelos has ‘settled down’ this season after some disciplinary issues last term.

Whilst Rangers can rotate Morelos and Defoe, Sutton is worried that Celtic have little depth behind Odsonne Edouard, with Leigh Griffiths still searching for fitness and Vakoun Issouf Bayo yet to prove himself, meaning Sutton thinks the title race will be a really close one.

“I think this season that Rangers have strengthened, they have competition for places, and I didn’t think Celtic and Rangers would slip up as much as against the ‘lesser’ teams – Celtic have twice in a week,” said Sutton. “That has surprised me, I thought it would come down solely to the derby games, so that would be a worry from Celtic’s point of view.”

“You can see Rangers are building something. I worry about Celtic if the centre forward Edouard gets injured, the backup is unproven. Rangers have Morelos, who this season seems to really have settled down, they’ve got Jermain Defoe who is scoring goals, [Gerrard] is able to rotate, they’re a team with confidence,” he added.
