The recently-departed Barnsley boss is among the favourites for the Sunderland job.
The Barnsley-supporting former England cricketer, Darren Gough, believes Daniel Stendel could end up landing on his feet if he heads to Sunderland.
Stendel left his position as Barnsley manager on Tuesday morning, just hours before Sunderland parted company with their boss, Jack Ross.
Even before then, fans of Sunderland and Barnsley had predicted that the German could become Ross’s successor – and he is already the favourite to do so with some bookmakers.
It would rub yet more salt in the wound for Gough, who saw his beloved side beat the Mackems to promotion to the Championship last season.
“If you speak to Barnsley fans out there they’ll tell you – some of the football they played last season was unbelievable,” said the Talksport Drive show co-host.
“How many pundits said that Barnsley played by far the best football? They didn’t win it (League One) in the end, but they played by far the best football in that division – and the manager’s gone already, whether he’s left on his own terms or not.
“Listen, he could end up at Sunderland on a better contract than he’s been on at Barnsley.”
Stendel was at Barnsley for just 16 months, but had remained almost universally popular even after his side slipped to 23rd in the Championship at the weekend.
And Gough added: “That’s the biggest thing – they love him, the fans.”
Sunderland fans – who do you want to replace Ross at the Stadium of Light?
