Rangers saw Mark Allen leave his post as director of football last month, but they appear to be closing in on a replacement; a man they wanted before Allen even took the job.

The Gers are thriving on the pitch, as a 5-0 home thrashing of Hamilton Academical this afternoon saw them go top of the Scottish Premiership.

As if taking advantage of Celtic's shock 2-0 defeat at Livingston wasn't enough, Rangers are now looking to make a big splash off the pitch, in the form of a new director of football.

Rangers wanted Southampton's director of football operations Ross Wilson in 2017, but he turned down a move to Ibrox, which resulted in Allen joining from Manchester City instead.

Allen has gone, meaning Rangers have gone back to targeting Wilson – and this time, they look to be closing in on a deal, with the Daily Mail claiming that Wilson is set to accept a move to Ibrox.

That's a major coup for Rangers if a deal does go through, as the Scot is highly regarded at Southampton, and a move is a sign that Rangers are not only looking to succeed on the pitch, but make big moves off it too.

Rangers fans have been taking to Twitter to react to the rumours, with many believing that the board are showing they mean with business with another 'brilliant' move.

Some called the move 'exciting' and 'phenomenal', with others just hoping the rumours are true and urging Rangers to get the deal done as soon as possible.
