Neil Lennon has rubbished the suggestion that he could loan out Celtic's Leigh Griffiths in January.

The 29-year-old Hoops hitman seems to have slipped to being Lennon's third-choice striker in Glasgow, behind Odsonne Edouard and Vakoun Issouf Bayo.

Griffiths hasn't played for Celtic since August due to injury and there has been suggestions from supporters that the Bhoys boss might loan him out this winter to help him play regular football.

But Lennon has told The Record that Griffiths - who scored 40 times in all competitions during the 2015-16 campaign - is far too good for a loan at this stage of his career.

He said: "Leigh won’t go on loan in January. He’s too good a player. He just needs more time to get up to speed.

“Leigh isn’t fit just now. He’s had a thigh strain and is starting back training. He had a virus that kept him out of the squad for Hibs and isn’t fit enough at the minute to figure."

Griffiths overcame a different type of battle during the second half of last season after going public with his mental health struggles.

But Lennon is right. This is an exceptional goalscorer and one who can seriously challenge Edouard when fully fit and firing.
