The Glasgow Rangers defender was one of several Ibrox players who had a poor game away in Switzerland for Steven Gerrard and co.
A number of Glasgow Rangers fans have been commenting on Twitter regarding the Ibrox side’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in the Europa League last night and one of the players who came under criticism was Connor Goldson.
While Rangers captain James Tavernier copped the majority of the flak for his role in both of the opponents’ goals, Goldson was also unconvincing, failing to clear when given the opportunity for Young Boys’ leveller and being beaten by pace for the winner.
The Ibrox side broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Alfredo Morelos shook off a defender and darted into the box before sliding the ball into the net, but the hosts levelled five minutes into the second half when Roger Assale fired in from close range.
Just as it seemed as though Steven Gerrard and co were on their way to a point, they conceded a second deep into added time when Christian Fassnacht fired in to condemn the Gers to an empty-handed return to Glasgow
All four teams in Group G now have three points apiece after Feyenoord beat Porto in the group’s other game.
Here is what some Bears on social media were saying about Goldson’s performance:
Tav is hard to drop, but 100% Goldson and Ojo see the bench on Sunday.— Scottie C (@CurrieScott) 3 October 2019
Is it just me or does goldson sky at least 1 header from a corner every game— CJ (@Cjnovo992) 3 October 2019
Katic gets dropped for nothing so Tav & Goldson should clearly be dropped for Sunday. Put Polster & Katic in team for a run of games.— Dave (@Nimsay1872) 3 October 2019
Connor Goldson needs dropped, James tavernier needs a good kick up the arse, Ojo needs sent back to Liverpool, Kamara showing that he truly is a £50,000 signing. Utter shite from start to finish— FollowFollowMeltdowns (@FollowMeltdowns) 3 October 2019
Na no having it , Goldson headered 3 over the bar and had a shocker at the back, nae defending him at all— JJ (@JordinnFramee) 3 October 2019
Echoes of Spartak away last season, how the hell have we conspired to loose that game, ill never know!— A’dammer 1872 (@arthur_mac74) 3 October 2019
1 in a 1000 save from their keeper too.
Poor from Tav, especially the first.
And FFS Goldson, learn to header down the way FFS! Time after time!
Anyway, all about Porto now!
Drop Tavernier after that performance he’s not at the races this season. Flannigan would have been better instead least he can defend. Goldson too looks poor this season. Both expect to be in the team and need dropped , nobody cannot have to earn their place at Rangers.— Stuart Johnston (@Reghar_II) 3 October 2019
I think Goldson was more at fault than Tavernier! Tavernier played a part in getting us back in control of the game in the second half too. Goldson hasn’t put a header from corner on target in weeks, defensively slow and quite lazyrecently, often out of position! @Cammydeee— Gregor Milligan (@GregorMilligan) 3 October 2019
Someone want to teach goldson how to header a baw— Robbie (@EwartRob) 3 October 2019
Goldson, a £3million signing for Rangers in 2018 (fee reported by Sky Sports), is rated highly by Gerrard and has got a lot of game time under him, but there have been fan concerns over his recent performances, with one especially lacklustre display in the recent Scottish League Cup game against Livingston.
