The 22-year-old was deputising in central defence for Joel Matip, who sustained ‘a slight knock’ in the win at Sheffield United last weekend, but he and Virgil van Dijk both had a night to forget as the Reds backline shipped three goals.
Gomez's positioning and distribution was not particularly impressive and he was given a difficult time by Hee-Chan Hwang, Patson Daka and later Erling Braut Haaland as Liverpool saw their three-goal lead cancelled out by the hour mark.
Although Mohamed Salah saved his side with a winner in the 69th minute for a 4-3 victory, there were questions asked of the defence, and quite a few fans took to social media to assess how Gomez performed.
Here is some of the reaction on Twitter:
We all do it including me ..we give certain players benefit of the doubt over others. But If lovren puts in a performance like Gomez did today there’d be carnage on LFC twitter ..never mind,3 points is all that counts. Not often under Klopp we’ve got complacent like tonight.#LFC— Grizz (@GrizzKhan) 2 October 2019
Gomez hasn't been the same since his injury... Matip and Van Dijk, together, looked untouchable at times. First game without Matip and we throw away a 3 goal lead... Would even go as far as to say that Matip has been our best defender this season.— Kloppholic (@Kloppholic) 2 October 2019
Joe Gomez is useless , he should never start a game for the club #LFC— Big Daddy (@nicky_fizzy) 2 October 2019
Gomez is terrible— Nicholas T (@nictsoi) 2 October 2019
What we have learnt from this game is how much we miss Joel Matip. So many times Gomez was caught out of position and pulling there players shirts. Should of been a convincing win but fair play to Salzburg they're a decent attacking threat. #LFC— Jonathan Fowler (@JonathanFowle10) 2 October 2019
Gomez want a playing time and he cant even cover for matip #LIVSAL— NOLANLFC champions (@king_fnar) 2 October 2019
Funny how if Gomez makes that mistake no one cares.— Owen (@LFCOwen96) 2 October 2019
