The Reds shipped three goals at Anfield after being three up as Jurgen Klopp’s charges claimed a narrow Champions League win.

A number of Liverpool fans have been commenting on Twitter about last night’s Champions League win over Red Bull Salzburg and one player who found himself criticised was Joe Gomez.

The 22-year-old was deputising in central defence for Joel Matip, who sustained ‘a slight knock’ in the win at Sheffield United last weekend, but he and Virgil van Dijk both had a night to forget as the Reds backline shipped three goals.

Gomez’s positioning and distribution was not particularly impressive and he was given a difficult time by Hee-Chan Hwang, Patson Daka and later Erling Braut Haaland as Liverpool saw their three-goal lead cancelled out by the hour mark.

Although Mohamed Salah saved his side with a winner in the 69th minute for a 4-3 victory, there were questions asked of the defence, and quite a few fans took to social media to assess how Gomez performed.

Here is some of the reaction on Twitter:

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015 for a £3.5million fee (BBC Sport), is on £28,000-per-week (Spotrac) and has made 72 appearances for the Reds (Transfermarkt).
