Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Chelsea defender Reece James will break into Frank Lampard’s first-team very shortly.

James has been injured at Chelsea since the start of the season, but the youngster made his first appearance in the League Cup against Grimsby Town last week.

Chelsea ran out 7-1 winners on that evening, with James’s display impressing.

The England youth international picked up a goal and an assist, as his rampaging runs down the right caused Grimsby all sorts of problems.

And Merson thinks that the future is now looking very bright for Chelsea, with so many promising youngsters breaking through.

“Reece James, who will be in the first team sooner rather than later, he's a proper player,” Merson enthused.

“Fikayo Tomori is very good, just look at how he handled Mohamed Salah last week. There's Ruben Loftus-Cheek who is yet to come back, Ross Barkley, who plays for England already, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi.”

James’s return should put serious pressure on Cesar Azpilicueta’s place at right-back.

Lampard has shown a willingness to trust Chelsea’s youngsters, and James must feel that chances are going to come his way.

Chelsea are in action later this evening, when they take on Lille.
