The French left-back has really impressed the Everton manager.
Everton boss Marco Silva has been waxing lyrical about a certain Lucas Digne.
The French left-back joined the Toffees in an £18 million deal from Barcelona in the summer of 2018 [The Guardian], before winning Everton’s Player of the Year for a brilliant first season on Merseyside.
The 26-year-old, at the moment, looks like following that up with another brilliant year at Goodison Park on an individual level.
Silva gave him the captain’s armband for last week’s Carabao Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday, and the Portuguese boss claims that it was a no-brainer due to the leadership that he’s been showing at Finch Farm since day one of his arrival.
“Lucas has everything we expect from a professional football player. Everything. And I am not just talking about his quality – everyone knows his quality,” he told Everton’s website.
“It is a pleasure to manage a player like him.
“Lucas was an example every day at Finch Farm last season, so it was an easy choice to give him this position… it is important to have these types of examples in important roles in our team.”
For £18 million, Digne has to go down as one of Marcel Brands’ best signings in terms of value for money.
The former Barcelona star is worth considerably more than that already and it’ll be interesting to see if another stand-out campaign from him results in transfer speculation next summer.
Everton would hate to lose him. He is their long-term Leighton Baines replacement and to only have him for two years would be devastating for fans of the Merseyside club – and Silva, by the sound of things.
