The Liverpool defender is likely to play no part in tomorrow’s Champions League encounter.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Joel Matip may sit out Wednesday’s visit of Salzburg in the Champions League.
The Cameroon international has been one of the Reds’ best players this season alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence, keeping Joe Gomez on the bench.
But it looks like Matip, a Bosman signing by Liverpool in 2016, picked up an injury in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United this past weekend, with Klopp revealing that he has a ‘slight knock’ which plunges his participation into doubt.
Klopp’s side lost their first Champions League outing in the defence of their title – a 2-0 reverse at Napoli last month – and more dropped points against the Austrian outfit wouldn’t be ideal.
Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted to the potential Matip blow:

Fortunately for Liverpool, Klopp has an able deputy in the form of Gomez, who must be champing at the bit following his low-profile start to the season.
Matip and Van Dijk have been immovable objects for the Anfield club this season, and toward the end of last term, meaning that the former Charlton star has had to be a spectactor.
But tomorrow could be his time to shine and you hope for Liverpool’s sake that he isn’t rusty.
