Ethan Robson scored a brilliant double as Grimsby Town beat League Two leaders Exeter – Jack Ross’ Sunderland must be watching closely.

While Will Grigg would struggle to hit a barn door with a double bass these days, a midfielder Sunderland loaned out over the summer scored a stunner with each foot during a match-winning display on Saturday.

Ethan Robson netted a brilliant individual effort to seal a 1-0 win for Grimsby Town against Macclesfield Town a week ago but he went one better away at Exeter City.

First there was a stunning first-time effort from the edge of the box, a left-footed rocket into the top corner after a well worked corner routine. The second was class personified – a shimmy, a swerve and an ingenious right-footed clip into the roof of the net.

Robson’s brilliant double meant Grimsby had beaten the League Two leaders on their own soil. No wonder manager Michael was left feeling Jolley.

And the 22-year-old’s heroic performance at St James’ Park (no, not that one) didn’t go unnoticed back on Wearside either. With Grigg and Charlie Wyke struggling in front of goal, Jack Ross’ side continue to lack any sort of cutting edge through the middle of the pitch but perhaps Robson is exactly what they’re missing.

Did anyone say ‘re-call clause’?
