Sheffield United lost 1-0 to Sunderland on Wednesday night.

Sheffield United are out of the Carabao Cup after losing 1-0 at home to League One side Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The Blades beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League, and were hoping to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup against third-tier Sunderland.

However, they fell behind early on as Max Power opened the scoring after just nine minutes, giving Sunderland hope of another upset having knocked out Burnley in the last round.

Sheffield United toiled away but couldn’t get the equaliser, meaning Sunderland have knocked out another Premier League team, and have moved into the fourth round.

Blades fans are unsurprisingly unhappy, as a much-rotated side couldn’t get the job done for Chris Wilder, with few of them really putting themselves in contention to face Liverpool this weekend.

United’s official account tweeted that on-loan Everton man Muhamed Besic won the man of the match award, with the Bosnian featuring in Wilder’s midfield.

However, Blades supporters took to Twitter to call the decision ’embarrassing’, believing that Besic ‘did nothing’ and ‘couldn’t get in a Sunday league team’.

Others think announcing a man of the match at all was ridiculous as they had lost to a League One side, but either way, they felt Besic wasn’t deserving of the accolade.
