The Ibrox legend was left unimpressed by a heavy challenge on the Rangers man.

Ally McCoist, the Rangers manager, looks on during the pre season friendly match between Derby County and Rangers at iPro Stadium on August 2, 2014 in Derby, England.

Former Rangers striker and pundit Ally McCoist was left fuming by the challenge of Ricki Lamie on Ibrox midfielder Joe Aribo on Wednesday night, speaking on BT Sport.

McCoist was on panel duties for the Scottish League Clup clash between Steven Gerrard’s side and Livi, with the Gers progressing into the semi-final after a 1-0 victory.

However a grim injury to Aribo was a big worry coming out of the fixture for Rangers fans, with The Scottish Sun reporting he required 20 stitches after being caught by an elbow of Lamie.

For McCoist, it was a definited red card, condemning the the Livi man as ‘reckless’.

Speaking on last night’s BT Sport broadcast of the match, the former Gers boss said: “I think he is very fortunate to stay on the park. I think it could be a red card.

“He leads with his elbow both times. He will say he’s using his elbow for leverage and going to protect himself.

“Is it reckless? Yes. It gets worse every time I see it. I think the bandage round the head would indicate he has definitely endangered the opponent.”

Gerrard now left with a midfield problem

With Aribo now facing a few weeks on the sidelines due to the injury, Gerrard will have to find another blend in the middle of the park that can win matches domestically and compete in Europe.

The most likely candidate to play regularly in his absence is Glen Kamara, who managed to get himself on the scoresheet on Wednesday night.

A central three that includes him, Steven Davis and Ryan Jack should have the mettle to take a hold of most matches they play over the coming month.

Joseph Ayodele-Aribo (Glasgow),Radoslaw Majecki (Legia) during the UEFA Europa League Play Off First Leg match between Legia Warsaw and Rangers FC on August 22, 2019 in Warsaw, Poland.

Aribo’s absence could see a dip in creativity, but it’s now on others to show that they can be ambitious in attack as well as defensively sound.

It’s a big blow for the Nigerian, who would also have been eager to join up with his country for a match against Brazil last month. It’s now unknown whether he’ll make that fixture.
