Bellerin took his first steps back on the field for Arsenal last night in their 5-0 League Cup victory over Forest, as the right-back aims to recover from long-term injury.
The Spaniard, who is on a £110,000-a-week contract (Spotrac), had initially wanted to play from the start, as he was keen to be thrown in at the deep end.
However, Arsenal boss Emery says that he was not prepared to risk the rapid defender.
“He wanted to play 90. He said I’m ready and wanted to play,” Emery said.
“I think no. Maybe in his mind yes. We need to listen to the doctor.
“The first minutes were amazing for him. The most important for him is his attitude. He wants to help us.”
Bellerin’s return to fitness for Arsenal should be a major boost to Emery’s side.
The Gunners have been forced to use Ainsley Maitland-Niles there regularly this term, but even he has admitted that he doesn’t really see himself as a defender.
Arsenal were also boosted by the return of Kieran Tierney last night, and that means that Emery may have two new full-backs to call upon soon.
Arsenal’s next game comes against Manchester United on Monday evening.
