The Saints midfielder won plaudits as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side thrashed their bitter rivals on their own turf in the League Cup.
A number of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the Carabao Cup third-round thrashing of Portsmouth and Oriol Romeu was amongst the players especially lauded for their displays on the night.
The 28-year-old put in a steely, assured display in the centre of the park as the Saints ended up making light work of their South Coast opponents at Fratton Park, their first win on their rivals’ own turf since 1984.
Although Portsmouth did begin brightly and weighed in with numerous attacks against their Premier League opponents, Southampton soaked the pressure and took their chances, with boyhood Saint Danny Ings breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes.
He then doubled his tally and his side’s advantage just before the interval, while Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond got on the scoresheet in the latter stages of the game to make it a day to remember for the Southampton contingent.
Here is what some Saints fans said on social media regarding Romeu’s display:
Got stick on Friday but tonight was a master class from Ralph.— Will Potter (@pottsy02) September 24, 2019
Romeu bossing it yet again. #saintsfc
Not a very good team performance & a few very poor individual performances (Adams,Hojbjerg, Obafemi) yet we still won 4-0. Ings was sensational, Romeu a rock and great 2 see Bertrand play a full 90 #saintsfc #upthesaints #4-0— Dean (@ClarkKent1979) September 24, 2019
Oriol Romeu absolutely brilliant for Southampton tonight. #SaintsFC took care of business. Danny Ings had that extra bit of class too to score twice and have a hand in another. Tremendous atmosphere for the #SouthCoastDerby at #Pompey. Can we have more of these!?— Joe Prince-Wright (@JPW_NBCSports) September 24, 2019
The back five and Romeu were brilliant tonight, I thought. Played the game and the occasion really well #saintsfc— Tom Williams (@tomwilliams2015) September 24, 2019
#saintsfc thought Saints management of game was first class tonight, playing players in right position helped! Romeu looks like he is revelling in role and JWP more aggressive which was encouraging! Ings showed Adams how to be direct, his day will come! PEH disappointing tho— Simon Thorpe (@dankiz1) September 24, 2019
Well done ori, best player for us this season so far.— 7amblyn (@7amblyn) September 24, 2019
Romeu has been with Southampton since 2015 for a reported £6.3million (Transfermarkt), and has made upwards of 150 appearances for the St Mary’s side.
