The Everton midfielder didn't cover himself in glory on his first start of the season.
Everton bounced back from a demoralising defeat by Sheffield United last week by beating their local rivals in the Carabao Cup.
The Blades beat Marco Silva's side 2-0 at Goodison Park this past weekend, but the Toffees responded well by edging out Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough to reach the fourth round.
An early double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin was enough to alleviate some pressure on the Everton manager, but not all fans were happy last night.
Tom Davies, in particular, looked rather shaky on what was his first start of the season under the Portuguese manager.
Jordan Pickford spared his team-mate's blushes on one occasion when a loose pass from Davies led to Sam Winnall going through one-on-one with the Everton keeper, but he kept Winnall out.
It was a clear sign of rust from the Finch Farm product, who had only 11 minutes of football all season prior to last night. Here's how fans of the Merseyside club reacted to his performance:
Tom Davies is no better than Morgan Schniederlin pass it on— Tom (@tr_efc) September 24, 2019
was awful today wasn’t he— zac (@z_c31) September 24, 2019
But he was keeping him fresh for Sat & clearly Iwobi needed another 90 mins. Davies didn't have his best game, but it's his first full game all season. Give the kid a break. We want him to be able to kick on, no need to criticise every decision or pass he makes. #EFC— Paul Williams (@williams_pd) September 24, 2019
Never really been a fan of tom Davies but he played tonight and we won, can't be a coincidence.— Rob (@EFC_Rob) September 24, 2019
Viva Tom Davies
Davies not good enough mate and sidibe pretty encouraging, good performance as far as am concerned best player in everton shirt I think can’t think of anyone else who played as well as him— Tom (@tr_efc) September 24, 2019
Good, hopefuly he can take Colemans place thought Davies is finished here for a while. Thanks for the update. Fair play to you for going lad— John lynch (@johnlynch1973) September 24, 2019
what does tom davies do he’s useless— George (@georgemcc1878) September 24, 2019
Silva clearly has a lot of faith in the 21-year-old, whom he tipped as a potential future captain last season [The Echo].
But he obviously needs more game time, though where it'll come from after last night remains to be seen.
