It took years and years, but they ended up together in the end.
What a year at the Emmys!
The 2019 ceremony was an absolute dream, with so many exceptionally talented individuals taking to the stage and celebrating their hard work.
One of the highlights of the night was the speech from Billy Porter; it received a deserved standing ovation. The Broadway star, actor and singer won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his spellbinding turn as Pray Tell in Pose.
The 50-year-old captivated the room, proving why he was the right choice to earn the accolade, despite being up against the likes of Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harrington (Jon Snow), Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk (Jimmy McGill) and more. It was a historical moment in Emmys history; “I love you all,” he said, fighting back tears of joy. He previously won other awards for his role in Broadway’s Kinky Boots, but this was yet another wonderful win – and indeed, a pleasure to watch.
Billy Porter and Adam Smith
Although many will know of Billy Porter through his wonderful work across stage and screen, you may know little about his husband Adam Porter-Smith.
The pair tied the know in January 2017 and have been happily married ever since.
Adam is an American businessman and the co-owner of Native Ken – an eyewear specialist – hailing from Arkansas. Although they were married in 2017, it appears that their relationship goes way further back than that.
How did they meet?
A People article revealed that their romance was shy of a decade in the making despite them only being engaged for just over a week when their wedding caught our attention.
They first met while dining with friends in February 2009 in New York. The pair sat together, but it turns out that wasn’t just by chance – there’s a little more to it than that. Billy spied Adam on his way to the restaurant and upon realising they’d be dining together he knew he had to sit with him: “Well, I’ll be sittin’ next to this handsome specimen tonight,” he said, revealing his thoughts in an interview.
This started it all and they actually dated for a year before breaking up. The relaxed vibe of the relationship sort of buckled. They remained friends after the 2010 break-up, but both still felt a connection lingered despite exploring more of life apart. Billy even told his therapist: “Now I know what love looks like, and it just walked out the door,” calling Adam “…the one that got away.”
Building up to the question
Adam said: “We almost acted like we were boyfriends at times,” even after they’d split. The eyewear figure reveals he knew he’d have to make the move if he’d ever be with him again and in 2015 he took the plunge after the pair shared a touching moment of hand-holding on his birthday.
After a visit to the theatre, they stopped the car on the way to a restaurant and both declared their love for one another. The proposal, on the other hand, proved to be a much more daunting feat – it had to be perfect. Down the line, in a London restaurant, he orchestrated it and got that all-important “I Will.”
They were later married at a friend’s Manhattan penthouse, and it’s all history!
