Football fans have been left absolutely dumbfounded by Steve Bruce’s comments about Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll at his press conference today.
Carroll could make his return to action for Newcastle at the weekend, as he is set to be on the substitutes’ bench when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion.
The target-man has fought his way back from injury, and his return to fitness could be a huge boost to Newcastle.
"I don't think there's been anybody better in the last 8-10 years when he's been playing,” he said.
The comments have been left open to ridicule by supporters of Newcastle and other clubs though, as they feel Bruce may be overselling the talents of Carroll somewhat.
No way he said that. Not even he is that dumb. Is he?— Ash McNally (@ash_mcnally90) September 20, 2019
Even Carroll's agent would be a bit sheepish about saying something like that— Phil Ashby (@philntfc) September 20, 2019
No way is that a real quote, surely?— Tim Johnson (@Tim_Johnson16) September 20, 2019
Is he drunk?!— Andrew Jenkins (@andmjenks) September 20, 2019
Sure Steve, he is a very good header of the ball but only 24 goals since the start of the 2014/5 season. I’m going to stick my neck out and say that he isn’t the best of the big goal scorers even allowing for the lack of fitness.— Richard (@RichYorks) September 20, 2019
Steven, Steven, Steven. I’m so sorry but you are wrong.— Mat Horsman (@matjhorsman) September 20, 2019
All those defensive headers are taking their toll on poor old Steve.— PtheP (@PtheP) September 20, 2019
Bruce’s statement was hyperbolic, but Carroll does offer Newcastle a skill-set which is fairly rare on modern day football.
No defender will enjoy coming up against Carroll when he is at the top of his game, as he is so physically and aerially dominant.
Carroll’s return to the fold at Newcastle should help Bruce’s side pose more of an attacking threat, which could be key as they look to climb up the Premier League table.
