Arsenal manager Unai Emery has told the club’s official website what he told Emile Smith Rowe when he substituted him against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday evening.

Smith Rowe was in action for Arsenal in their Europa League Group F game against Frankfurt away from home in Germany.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder started the match and played for 60 minutes, as the Gunners won 3-0.

The teenager did not have a great time for Arsenal, but he did show glimpses of his talent and was always ready to do something creative.

According to WhoScored, the English youngster had a pass accuracy of 69.2%, and made one interception and one clearance.

Emery told Arsenal’s official website about Smith Rowe when asked what he said to the player when he was replaced: “With him, we need to do more work with him on the pitch and outside. Last year, he started well with us and played some matches.

“After, he left he on loan to Germany and then when he came back he was injured. He played some matches with the under-23s, so today was big challenge for him.

"It was a big opportunity but also we needed to protect him. He worked very well and I was very happy with him. I told him that.”

Improving

Smith Rowe’s performance against Frankfurt was far from great, but the attacking midfielder is only 19 years of age, and is still developing and progressing as a footballer.

Playing in matches against teams such as Frankfurt will only make the 19-year-old learn and become more mature.
