Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley missed a crucial spot kick against Valencia, as Frank Lampard’s side slipped to defeat.
Chelsea fans are not happy with Ross Barkley, after he suggested that he would take a penalty again despite his recently miss.
Barkley, who is on a £100,000-a-week contract (Spotrac), fought his way to the front of the queue to take a spot kick for Chelsea against Valencia on Tuesday night, only to hit his shot over the bar.
Most Chelsea fans had been expecting Jorginho to take the penalty, as the Italian has a hugely impressive record from 12 yards.
“When I’m on the pitch, I’ll take the penalty,” he said. “Obviously I didn’t execute it right but everybody misses penalties. I didn’t score the goal but I felt confident. If there was another penalty in the game, I would have been confident to take it.”
The comments have not gone down well at all with Chelsea fans, who think the attacking midfielder has overstepped the mark.
This is a joke! Was Barkley even a 1st penalty taker during his time at Everton where he constantly got more game time play? How much more a big club like Chelsea that he has less game time. Someone must pinch Lampard that he is no more coaching a Championship side!— Kwabena ⭕ (@KbStern) September 18, 2019

He doesn’t make the team on a regular basis constantly under performances gets SUBBED in and somehow takes priority over Jorginho Willian and Azpi then has the nerve to run his mouth what planet is he from ..— Jason Bigs (@BigsStill) September 18, 2019
Will be funny to see him take them from the bench.— Sam1 (@Vatoviq) September 18, 2019
A big lie. Lampard is trying to cover him. If Barkley was the main penalty taker then I don’t think Jorginho, Willian and Tammy will not be discussing it #CFC— ️️ (@ashdxb) September 18, 2019

This guy is mad. Jorginho is the taker. Simple as.— Arjun Rangarajan (@arjranga) September 18, 2019
Barkley was already fighting to win over the Chelsea crowd, so his penalty miss has hardly done him any favours.
It now remains to be seen whether Frank Lampard will keep faith with Barkley at the weekend, or whether he will be taken out of Chelsea’s starting line-up.
The Blues’ next fixture comes against Liverpool, in what looks set to be a very tough test.
